"Science is divine: it is neither of human origin nor of human direction. That which is termed 'natural science,' the evidences whereof are taken in by the five-personal senses, presents but a finite, feeble sense of the infinite law of God; which law is written on the heart, received through the affections, spiritually understood, and demonstrated in our lives. This law of God is the Science of mental healing, spiritually discerned, understood, and obeyed." These words are from the pen of Mary Baker Eddy and are found on page 172 of "Miscellaneous Writings." Here Mrs. Eddy identifies "the infinite law of God" as "the Science of mental healing," which is Christian Science. This identification of real law with scientific mental healing warrants the careful consideration of Christian Scientists.
What religious leader has there been since Paul, save Mrs. Eddy, with the vision to thus place divine law in its true category of healing! Paul similarly characterized divine law when in his letter to the Romans, after declaring (8:1), "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus," he added, "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death." In contradistinction to the all-healing law of God there seems to human sense an opposing law of the carnal mind, which declares that if its rules of health are not obeyed, mortals will be punished by condemnation to sickness and suffering and ultimately to death. It would also condemn mankind to periodic wars and to uncertainty and unrest between its wars. Through Christian Science, "the Science of mental healing," we can prove material evidence to be unreal. God's law is changeless, perfect, inviolate. "The law of sin and death," in all its claims, is negative and is not inviolate, because it is not law.
Because God's law is the law of eternal Life, the so-called law of old age is unreal. God knows nothing of the human concept of years; therefore His creation, man, cannot be touched by it. The functions and faculties of Mind, forever reflected by man, can neither deteriorate nor be destroyed; nor can usefulness, health, activity, and intelligence be governed or be reduced by time. In her definition of "day," on page 584 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes in part, "The objects of time and sense disappear in the illumination of spiritual understanding, and Mind measures time according to the good that is unfolded." As we see time in its true perspective of unfoldment, instead of accretion and then deterioration, we are freed from the claims of limitation and destruction. "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" forever frees from every law of condemnation.
