Over forty years ago our four-year-old son was healed of spinal meningitis through Christian Science after a doctor had said that the boy could not live. Later the doctor acknowledged that it was Christian Science that had healed the child.
At one time I was saved from drowning. The angel message, "God is my Life," kept repeating itself to me, and I said, "I cannot die." I found myself lying on the surface of the water with my hands clasped behind my head, and I floated downstream until a boat came for me. For many years the memory of the consciousness I then had of God's nearness and power has been a great comfort to me when I have had to meet some problem of sickness or sin. Truly, "closer is He than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet."
I again proved the truth when a child and I were alone at a camp. In the night, overwhelmed with fear, I rose to read my Bible and turned immediately to Ezekiel, where it is written (34:25), "I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause the evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell safely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods." The fear left me, and for several months we lived peacefully in the beautiful woods. Once we were snowed in, with no ill effects. At another time fear of poisonous snakes was overcome by our opening to page 371 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and reading, "As frightened children look everywhere for the imaginary ghost, so sick humanity sees danger in every direction, and looks for relief in all ways except the right one." We knew that no evil could or would come near us, and it never did.
