"AND GOD SAID, LET THERE BE LIGHT"

From the June 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When beginning the study of Christian Science, many are immediately aware that a hitherto unknown light is illuminating the Scriptures. Dark ignorance or misunderstanding of the Bible is dispelled in proportion as one studies the Word of God in the light of this spiritual interpretation.

God's light, by which reality is revealed, cannot be dimmed. No matter what the seeming difficulty may be, whether it be war, pestilence, famine, disease, sin, or death, God's healing light discloses that actually nothing exists that is unlike Him. Since God is the only creator and man is His image, or reflection, this effulgence must be expressed by His idea, man. An understanding of this divine fact enables the Christian Scientist to prove God's bountiful goodness to all the world as did Jesus and his disciples. Jesus freed the poor, the suffering, the misguided ones. Their false concepts of God and man were powerless to continue witnessing to the reality of discord when the searching light of Truth was turned on them by the Master.

At one time, when he was teaching in a certain place, Jesus stressed the importance of singleness of purpose by saying (Luke 11:34, 35): "The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness." Singleness of purpose eliminates vacillating between Truth and error, protesting one's confidence in Spirit while believing at the same time that matter has power either to please or to harm. Vigilance in holding thought to God's law of ever-present good enables us to rout the dark images of thought instantly, so that they find no lodgment in our thinking.
