"THE GABRIEL OF HIS PRESENCE"

From the June 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the book of Revelation, John, most beloved of the disciples, set forth in majestic symbolism the spiritual nature of God's creation. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, interprets this symbolism in basic teachings of Christian Science. In the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in the chapter designated "The Apocalypse," she describes the final ascent in wisdom and humility to the sunlit heights of Mind, revealed and expressed.

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth," says John (Rev. 21:1). Every student of Christian Science has, in some degree, the same glorious experience as he learns that God, divine Love, is infinite and absolute in presence, power, and government. From that moment the shackles of ignorance and superstition begin to fall away into that oblivion where even the remembrance of them is blotted out, "and the former [things] shall not be remembered, nor come into mind" (Isa. 65:17).

The Life that Christian Science reveals as pure Mind, Spirit, divine consciousness, expressed infinitely in the individuality of Mind's ideas, is the Life to which the Master bore witness. This Life, reflected in man, is not material or a compound of mind and matter: it is incorruptible, irreversible, and immortal. The understanding of Life as Mind throws into relief the various guises of error—disease, hatred, fear, tyranny, and the like. But whereas before we viewed them as real and terrifying, the manifestations of a power opposed to God, good, in Christian Science we view them from the standpoint of the allness of God, Truth. From this standpoint they are seen as lawless, worthless negations, devoid of Principle, identity, power, or presence.
