THE CHALLENGE OF THIS HOUR

From the June 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Universally present in the realm of spiritual existence and available to govern the affairs of men is God, the operative divine Principle enforcing the laws of good. It is for that reason that at certain critical times in history opportune events have transpired which tended to preserve an era which would otherwise have gone into oblivion, as have many civilizations in the past. The laws of God as revealed by Moses lightened a dark period in Hebrew history without which the wanderings of the children of Israel might have resulted in the loss of true worship to the world. The coming of Christ Jesus with the gospel of salvation brought to light the understanding of Truth which persisted despite the long Dark Ages which followed. History is shaped not so much by material events as by spiritual developments in the thoughts of men.

At this present period of our western civilization nations appear puzzled and frustrated before a growing awareness of oriental philosophy and concerted mind movements, new to them but old in their subtle claims of control over the minds of men. In the present situation this age-old evil would appear to govern the thinking and decisions of world leaders, political and military, and affect the well-being of persons everywhere, unless its powerlessness is understood and its effects are nullified. Opportune for the world in bringing an awakening to this civilization has been the advent of Christian Science, which because of its spiritual power is in fact the second coming of Christ as foretold by Jesus. Its discovery was not a mere coincidence but the fulfilling of prophecy, bringing again the salvation of Christ to a world very much in need.

In order to grasp the portentousness of our times we should understand the nature of the error behind aggression. Confusion, fear, accident, crime, cruelty, catastrophe, malice, and warfare seem to interfere with the harmonious progress of human affairs. They appear to operate by reason of the supposed mortal mind law of opposites. Darkness is the opposite of light, malice the opposite of love, a lie the reverse of truth, evil the opposite of good. The suppositional reverse of reality accounts for all the woe of mankind. But this seeming reverse is apparent only to error itself, not to Truth. Such reversal is a deception of mortal mind, an illusion of the human consciousness. Actually it exists nowhere, at no time, in no place.
