THE MOTHER CHURCH EXTENSION

From the June 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The edifice of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, is unique. There is no church building exactly like it. The building represents a unique discovery which can never be paralleled or repeated. The discovery referred to is Christian Science.

In connection with the Original Edifice, Mary Baker Eddy has said (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 141), "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, our prayer in stone, will be the prophecy fulfilled, the monument upreared, of Christian Science." The beautiful building, built on a triangular plot of ground, now consists of two structures joined inseparably together: the Original Edifice, built in 1894, and the Extension, erected in 1904.

The Extension was necessary because of the growing numbers of Christian Scientists and the inadequacy of the smaller building to accommodate them. At the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church held on June 18, 1902, it was voted to contribute any portion of two million dollars for the erection of a building that would accommodate four or five thousand people. This building is known as the Extension of The Mother Church. Those who have seen it are impressed by its vast proportions, dignity, and graceful lines.
