Christian Science is becoming more widely known throughout the world as the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus, as the one infallible refuge from human ills. Greater and more abundant proof is daily being made available to all that an understanding of this Science, as discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866, is equal to solving any problem material existence may present.
In order that the truth contained in Christian Science may be even more widely and quickly demonstrated, however, it is necessary for students to align themselves with the real purpose and motive behind all Christian healing. Jesus stated this purpose when he was told that his friend Lazarus was sick. He immediately responded (John 11:4), "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." To him, the highest motive in healing was to glorify God, to bear witness to the fact that God is. He knew that to glorify God, who is All and who is Love, by proving the ever-avail-ability of His loving-kindness was inclusive of any lesser human reason for healing which might have seemed urgent.
Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, tells us frequently in her writings that what we are really striving for in Christian Science healing is spiritualization of thought, not the human manifestation of harmony. The material result of restored health, happiness, or success is only the evidence to human sense that thought has in a degree been spiritualized, an indication that the Christ, now as in Jesus' time, is performing its ordained mission, to which Mrs. Eddy refers in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" when she writes (p. 150), "Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."
