THE WAY OF LIFE

From the September 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death," we read in Proverbs (12:28). Since God is All-in-all and man is His image and likeness, as Christian Science teaches, the way of righteousness which leads to Life is found to be a conscious acceptance of man's perpetual unity with God, his divine Principle, wherein man expresses all that God is. This understanding of man's spiritual origin and identity becomes the way of Life to mankind, of immortality, of Truth, of intelligence and Love, the law of their being.

The way that leads to Life necessarily does not lead to pain, weariness, sickness, or death, or to a mortal concept of existence with its foreshortened sense of life and limited view of all things, for materiality and mortal man are not of God's creating, but are unreal. The spiritual man's coexistence with God assures his eternality of being and his immortal destiny.

Speaking of his mission to the unbelieving Pharisees, Christ Jesus said (John 10:10), "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." And he demonstrated a better sense of life for his followers by healing the sick and the sinful and restoring to life those who had seemed to die. And last of all he proved on the cross the nothingness of death by knowing that God was his Life. He knew that he could show the way out of the belief of human existence by destroying the belief of death, and he said, "I am the way" (John 14:6). But the world has not understood him. He left this plane of existence through ascension, when he rose above the limited comprehension of his disciples to a higher consciousness of being, thereby proving that Spirit, not matter, is substance.
