My attention was first directed to Christian Science during my stay in Paris in 1925, and I resolved at once to become better acquainted with it. My plan to return to my homeland, Estonia, was changed, and I stayed in Paris for several months in order to study this wonderful Science.
The explanation by Mary Baker Eddy in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," that man is not material but spiritual, was to me a revelation. As a dancer I had endeavored to express my ideas through dominion over the body. Now I began to see that man lives in Spirit, not in matter, and that the way to dominion lies in Spirit.
After my return home Christian Science services were held in my dance studio. In 1931, I received class instruction and became a Christian Science practitioner. During World War II, when Estonia became an occupied country, I had to leave my homeland. With many other refugees I was packed into a military transport train which was about to make its return trip to Germany. The one in charge of the train stated that the journey would be extremely dangerous, since we would pass near several fields of combat. He doubted whether we would ever reach Germany in safety.
