"O How love I thy law!" sang the Psalmist (Ps. 119:97). "It is my meditation all the day." In this spontaneous expression of praise one with spiritual vision centuries ago made an arresting statement. He declared in substance that God's law is lovable. What an unusual quality to ascribe to law! We do not usually think of human law as something to be regarded with affection, however much we respect it. And surely in Old Testament times the stern law of the formal Hebrew religion was not so regarded. But when we consider the nature of God's law, we understand why the Psalmist could say that he loved it.
Since God's law is an expression of His nature, it is, like God, adorable. A glimpse of the infinite loveliness of God's nature is given us by Mary Baker Eddy on page 465 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she names the synonyms of God as Mind, Spirit, Soul. Principle, Life, Truth, Love. When one considers that God's law is expressed through each of these synonymous terms for Him, its wholly beneficent character becomes apparent.
A law of Mind, it enables every individual to express the highest intelligence. A law of Spirit, it annuls every claim of matter and frees one from the claims of sin and sickness. A law of Soul, it assures perpetual loveliness to all of God's creation. A law of Principle, it expresses righteousness. A law of Life, it gives full protection from danger and freedom from belief in decadence and death. A law of Truth, it obliterates falsehood and establishes the reality of good—of health, ability, brotherhood, artistic expression, abundant supply. A law of Love, it is forever operating to bless all creation.
