There is no humanly permanent status quo. Christian Science teaches that "mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual,—they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite,—in order that sin and mortality may be put off" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 265). The purification or spiritualization of human consciousness is an evolutionary process, a gradual step-by-step unfoldment of man's true being. Spiritual growth is the natural and inevitable result of God's law of progress—the irresistible law which causes mankind to hope and work for a happier and more peaceful way of life.
Christian Scientists are finding happiness and peace in a calm, poised, and discerning Christlike consciousness, and they are advancing Godward by keeping their thought focused on God, good. Those who are well grounded in the spiritual facts of being are neither perplexed nor dismayed by the confusion and strife that seem to prevail in the present-day world. They have learned that Love is the only power; that good is the only reality. Truth is their guide and goal and in scientific terms interprets God and man as the perfect Principle and its perfect, eternal manifestation. It denominates evil and sickness as erroneous beliefs of a supposititious carnal mind which are nothing but mesmeric seemings, without real origin or power, and so in the truest sense are nonexistent.
Thus with eyes fixed on spiritual truth Christian Scientists are able to see through the material smoke screen of error—sin and disease, "wars and rumours of wars"—and scientifically to discern what is actually taking place in the minds of mortals. From this observation they see that without doubt the Love which is God is working out its divine purpose in the world; that fear, selfishness, envy, and hate are retreating from the field of thought as human planning gives way to the divine order—as "my will" surrenders to "Thy will be done" (Matt. 26:42). They cannot fail to observe the constant operation of divine Principle in the world movement for freedom and to behold on all fronts a growing impatience with error, a great stirring of thought, a mighty upsurge for purity, peace, and good will on earth.
