INDIVIDUAL SALVATION

From the April 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science reveals that salvation is individually attained. None can obtain it through the efforts of another or others. That salvation is available to all, each one can prove for himself as he awakens more and more to the realization of God's nature, for no one is excluded from the kingdom of God. Christ Jesus said (Luke 12:32), "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."

Many people have been heard to remark that they have no need of salvation. They accept mortal mind's claims of birth, growth, maturity, and decay, ending in final dissolution, as all that they can expect; in the meantime they meet hardships, lack, sickness, and death with a resignation that accepts such things as inevitable. Should we be satisfied with such a fate? We do not have to be, for Christian Science reveals how we can save ourselves from the ills of the flesh and all inharmonious conditions and demonstrate God's infinite goodness and ever-present care.

Immortal spiritual man, the true immortal selfhood of each one of us, is the man of God's creation, whom mortal sense has not seen. This true selfhood is forever perfect and intact, needing no salvation. But the human sense of self has to discern and demonstrate the perfection of true being, and this constitutes salvation. The average individual seldom is aware of Spirit and the perfection of spiritual ideas. The human being unenlightened by Christian Science is apparently holding to mortal mind beliefs in the reality of life and intelligence in matter. Personal sense and the myriad illusions of this sense dream have no basis in Truth and do not constitute immortal man. A human being, therefore, needs to acquaint himself with God, learn the actual meaning of that wonderful word, and perceive and understand the infinite One. The more we learn of God, the more we demonstrate His infinite presence and universal goodness and find mortal beliefs fading away. This is the only real salvation.
