LOVE

From the April 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the opening paragraph of her article "Love" in "Miscellaneous Writings" Mary Baker Eddy writes (pp. 249, 250): "What a word! I am in awe before it. Over what worlds on worlds it hath range and is sovereign! the underived, the incomparable, the infinite All of good, the alone God, is Love." And we might humbly add, "What a superb definition of the most vital word in the English language!" This modern disciple of Christ Jesus discovered from her own rich experience that "he that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love" (I John 4:8).

Fundamental in the teaching and practice of Christian Science is the fact that God is Love; that the acme of being, its cause, source, sum, and substance, is Love. From God, Love, are derived the inexorable law, impulsion, and power of good. Love is self-existent, all-inclusive, and infinitely diversified in its manifestation. It proclaims its omnipresence, omniscience, omnipotence, and omniaction through its universal, ceaseless beneficence. Every truly loving thought and deed has its source in God and illustrates the healing Christ.

When Moses heard the voice out of the burning bush instructing him to lead the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage, it was God, divine Love, the Principle of his being, who spoke to his receptive thought. But fearful personal sense momentarily obscured Moses' thought, for he timidly answered (Ex. 3:11), "Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?" Again the voice of God, divine Love, was heard in the comforting assurance, "Certainly I will be with thee." Then Moses received that spiritual revelation of the name and nature of God as the I AM THAT I AM.
