THE MYTH OF MATTER

From the April 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Undoubtedly this present age will be recorded in history as the period in which a right evaluation of matter was made. Even while materialism seems rampant in many quarters, the very knowledge which undermines that materialism is advancing. The most potent revolution going on in the world is the change that is taking place in human thought in regard to the nature of matter. The physicists have reduced the atom to force. Some of them are admitting that matter may be only a mental concept. But Mary Baker Eddy says in her "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 55), "If God is Spirit, as the Scriptures declare, and All-in-all, matter is mythology, and its laws are mortal beliefs."

Spirit's allness and matter's mythical nature have been proved through Christian Science too many times to merit disinterest. Indeed, the entire healing method of this Science is based upon these two leading factors. Only the understanding of the real and immutable substance of Spirit, its energizing laws and resistless ideas, can give the physicist's findings their full significance. It is when this understanding is reached and matter is seen not only as a mental state, but as a myth, that material laws become subordinate to God's good will and matter ceases to intimidate and dominate thought. Then men are released from sin and sickness and all the ills that spring from a wrong evaluation of matter.

It is the separation of myth from fact that spiritualizes human consciousness, quickens thought to states of integrity and affection for good and the body to conditions of health. We can be assured that Christ Jesus made this separation, because he said plainly (John 3:6), "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit;" and again (John 6:63), "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."
