I came into Christian Science several years ago after three months of being in and out of hospitals with a blood infection and a nervous breakdown. I had a series of blood tests, X rays, shock treatments, and everything else that medical science recommended for my help; but I grew worse steadily and lost weight rapidly. I became more and more confused in my thinking and did not know where to turn for help.
My son-in-law had had healings in Christian Science, but I was very much opposed to what I thought this Science to be. One day in my extremity I called my daughter and said in desperation, "If your husband has something in his religion that I do not have, it is time he gave it to me." With joy she replied, "Mother, he has been waiting for three months to hear those words from you." Her husband came to my bedside at once and read to me the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly. I felt so well afterward that I was able to dress and go downstairs, where I ate a good dinner for the first time in weeks.
The next day I felt worse, however, and I called my son-in-law again and again for reassurance. Finally I said to him: "I have heard you speak of a practitioner. Do you think one would help me?" He assured, me that one would, and that night my husband called a practitioner, who visited me about an hour. As he repeated the twenty-third Psalm, the ninety-first Psalm, and the Lord's Prayer—loved passages of Scripture with which I had been familiar all my life —the tears ran down my cheeks, and a great uplifted feeling came to me. That night I slept a relaxed sleep without the use of drugs for the first time in months.
