AS FREE AS A BIRD

From the June 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As free as a bird is an expression usually employed to designate a carefree, untroubled, joyous mood and is associated with song, gratitude, harmony, and buoyant, zest-filled activity. This most nearly describes the freedom emanating from and to be found in all the manifestations of God.

God is defined in Christian Science as Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love. None of these synonyms implies limitation, since God is not localized, circumscribed, outlined, or confined. He is everywhere present, but never to be found in lifeless matter. God cannot be shackled or monopolized, cannot be stopped, harnessed, taxed, or limited. The synonyms for God can never be separated one from another, because together they indicate God's oneness and completeness.

Man is God's image, and therefore he expresses the nature, quality, and magnitude of that which constitutes his source. The fleshly mortal is an objectification of the carnal mind. But since God is One, and is Mind, the carnal mind must be an illusion or a belief. God did not create a second, competing mind. Therefore to have but one God, to acknowledge Him as All-in-all, to understand Him as the divine Principle of all being, and to see man as His idea, always under His guidance and uninterrupted control, gives boundless freedom.
