So subtly tempted, Lord, was I
To hearken to the serpent's lie;
But like a still small voice I heard
Throughout that fiery trial Thy Word,
Which came as pure, uplifted thought,
Dissolving that which was not wrought
By Thee, and therefore could not be
A law or power beguiling me.
