Be Still

From the July 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Be still. The gentleness of Love is here
To break earth's wild enchantment, penetrate
The torpid mind, and silence human fear
With peace. Be still. The turbulence of hate
And passion now must cease, and error's crude
Idealism fade away. Withstand
The hidden sin and boastful platitude
Of mortal sense with Love's protecting hand.
Be still. The golden atmosphere of Soul
Within the den of terror shines tonight,
And passive captives wake to see the goal
Of Life, pavilioned in eternal light.
Earth's clamor dies on barren fields apart,
But soundless tides of Love surround the heart.

Be still. In humble, silent prayer shut out
The clanging din and cold complexity
Of creed-bound thought, and let no blatant doubt
Or subtle fear disturb your harmony.
Be still. The quietude of Love divine
Is all around tonight. Be still, but not
As slothful genius idly sits, to pine
In dreamless discontent and fruitless thought.
By no unguided impulse shall you rise
Beyond the tumult and the night, for Love
Forever shepherds faith through new-found skies
To Spirit's undiscovered heights above.
And Love can disenthrall the sullen will
With peace, reclaim the restless heart. Be still.
