The essential dignity and worth of the individual are an integral part of the message of Christianity. It is significant that this individual worth is the thing which error in all its varying forms attempts to deny. Only as we insist upon the dignity of man, perceive it in our daily lives, refuse to belittle individual worth in the family, in daily contacts, or upon the national level, and spurn national or racial hatreds, can we effectively aid in bringing nearer the day when such recognition will be universal. In so doing we shall enrich and ennoble human life immeasurably.
The word dignity comes from the Latin dignus, meaning worthy. Dignity then is not an assumed manner. It is not a quality which some possess and some do not. It comes inevitably and effortlessly from the unassailable fact of man's sonship with God. A human sense of dignity may often be allied to vanity or pompousness. True dignity includes such lovely qualities as grace, humility, sincerity, and simplicity. It is the radiance of Soul, expressed in equanimity, serenity, poise. The Christ-consciousness within each of us, when demonstrated, impels respect and appreciation from all with whom we come in contact. And it is the Christ-consciousness which recognizes and loves spiritual worth in others.
True individuality is complete and can never be invaded or imposed upon. Unkind or petty criticism can be overcome by the realization that man's integrity cannot be questioned or his right of allegiance to his Maker alone contravened. The maintenance of man's status and individuality is God's province, and He never delegates His responsibility. The perfection and grandeur of man cannot be subjected to indignity any more than darkness can keep out sunlight.
