I am humbly and deeply grateful for Christian Science, and I should like to share with others a few of the many reasons for my gratitude. That Christian Science protects as well as cures is to me an established fact. My years of service in the armed forces during World War II gave me frequent opportunities to prove this to be true. The knowledge of God's ever-presence, which I gained as a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School, was a staff on which to lean. For having had the wonderful opportunity to learn in my early years the truth of God, I shall always be grateful. The habits of smoking and social drinking both disappeared before an influx of spiritual light into my thought.
After several years of preparation and earnest study of Christian Science I was led to take the beautiful and inspiring step of class instruction. On the evening preceding the last day of instruction, while crossing a busy street, I was struck by an automobile and knocked to the ground. My first thought was that there is no sensation in matter. I arose from the street and walked to the sidewalk, declaring to myself that God knows nothing about accidents. Quite a number of people gathered; and I noticed that my leg was bleeding profusely. The clear thought came to me that my life did not depend upon blood.
One of my classmates had witnessed the accident, and he helped me deny the material evidence. His kindness, alertness, and loving service will always be cause for much gratitude. At my request he called a practitioner, whom he asked to work for me. This was proof to me that when we reach out to God there is always assistance provided for us. The driver of the car offered to take me where I wished to go, and as it appeared that the wound was a severe one, I accepted his offer.
