Our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us on page 12 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," "Faith in divine Love supplies the ever-present help and now, and gives the power to 'act in the living present.'" I am increasingly grateful to be proving the truth of these words in my daily life, to be proving that as one leaves behind him a belief in a mortal selfhood and strives to claim his birthright of perfection, great good comes to him.
When I was twelve years old, I left the church with which my family had been united, and I began to attend the Christian Science Sunday School. As no other member of my family was interested in Science, I had to learn early to rely on God. I shall always be grateful for the loving counsel of my Sunday School teachers. Among the healings of my childhood was that of scarlet fever. Lack of confidence that I could pass school examinations was overcome also.
A false sense of responsibility and personal ambition brought a nervous breakdown. After many months during which I experienced symptoms of heart trouble, at my husband's insistence I went to a physician for examination. He pronounced the condition hypertension, and at the same time he told me I needed an immediate operation for fibroid tumors.
