Testimonies of Healing

"Thy testimonies have I taken as an...

From the December 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart" (Ps. 119:111). With a rejoicing heart I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science by testifying to its healing and redeeming power in human affairs. Some years ago when I began my studies at a large university, I had an experience in human relations which revealed to me beyond any final, lingering doubt that Christian Science is all-powerful in every field of activity.

Because of the religious background of one of my parents, I was denied membership in the social clubs at my university. So unusual was the problem which my situation posed that it soon became a topic of conversation on the campus. It was thought that I was the reason for this new unrest and acrimonious discussion; so I was avoided and shunned on the campus. I had always considered friendship of paramount importance at college, and I thought I had many friends, but they all began to slip away. I suddenly found myself alone and friendless, although my own freshman class at that time numbered over four thousand students.

In my deep despair I turned wholeheartedly and unreservedly to Christian Science, as I had been taught to do in the Christian Science Sunday School. It was then that I realized that it was my thinking which was in need of regeneration, and not the human situation. I had gone to the university seeking to get friendship. It was now revealed to me through my study of Christian Science that my real purpose at the university and in my entire experience was to give. I learned anew that I already had everything, which God had lovingly bequeathed to me as His image and likeness. In addition, I recognized that I must share His great gifts of humility, patience, joy, and understanding with my fellow men.
