For many years the daily study and application of the Lesson Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly have kept me well and strong. I began the study of Science twenty four years ago, when medical doctors said I had but a few months to live because of a lung hemorrhage, which they could not stop.
My husband's sister visited me and brought some Christian Science literature, which she asked me to read. I opened a copy of The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition), and my attention was caught by an article dealing with the healing of the woman "which had an issue of blood twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse" (Mark 5:25, 26). This was so like the condition in which I found myself that I could hardly wait to read what brought about the healing. I soon saw it was faith, and I resolved that very moment to find out what faith is and how to attain it. I refused to see another doctor and asked my husband to get me a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Having spent almost all that he had in an effort to have me healed, he was reluctant to buy Science and Health, but he visited a Christian Science Reading Room near his place of business and obtained a copy. Although I had spent many months in bed because of my weakened condition, after several weeks of earnest study and of learning the right way to pray, as set forth in the chapter on Prayer, I got up and went about the house doing the normal things that I felt it was right for me to do. Many times weakness would become very real to me, and I would have to go to bed, but by declaring that God is my strength I would be able to rise again. I learned that strength was indeed according to my day, as I had read in the Bible.
