WHERE THOUGHT AND ACTION MEET

From the February 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God's thoughts are active. Omnipotence is their native air. Christian Science enables us to make them our thoughts, and as we do so thought and action meet in demonstration. The far-off vision then takes on the pattern of reality. Frustrated hopes shake off their earth weights and soar into fulfillment. The stunted, shriveled life begins to blossom in usefulness and joy. These are practical results which come to pass as the truth of being awakens us from our false fears and dreams. Something from us is needed, though, if we are to prove all this. Human will must submit to the divine will. Something within ourselves must yield. When we take the side of spiritual reality the longed-for answer comes quietly and naturally. God can never be less than All-in-all.

Mary Baker Eddy, the revered Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has furnished the key to demonstration. In a profound message in "Miscellaneous writings" she tells us (p. 264): "Unity is the essential nature of Christian Science. Its Principle is One, and to demonstrate the divine One, demands oneness of thought and action." As our thoughts are lifted to the level of spiritual conviction they take form in deeds. It will never do, then, to sigh for a healed body, and at the same time to hold in thought a sick body. It will not help us if we look longingly at material remedies when we seek healing in Christian Science. Our actions should move in the same direction as our desires. To demonstrate Christian Science we should let thought and action walk hand in hand. First of all we must acknowledge that man is governed by unchanging Principle, the divine Principle, which is Love. Then we must hold fast. And to do this of course means giving up thoughts and motives and conclusions which deny that God alone governs man. In other words, the evidence which the physical senses present must be resisted. And we must expect harmony to prevail. In Science harmony does prevail. It is assured because it is the natural outcome of God's goodness.

The apostle declares (Hebr. 11:6), "He that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarded of them that diligently seek him." Divine Love sustains and fulfills every right desire. As the borders of our faith broaden, the desired results appear. Faith in good is nourished by the hand of God. It seeks no compromises, for it needs none. The struggle to win our way to this true faith is never in vain. So close is God to His reflection, man, that the desire to feel His presence can free itself from the educated beliefs of mortal mind which oppose it. Desire for health has its roots in infinite intelligence; it needs only to be purified of fear and materiality to find fulfillment in healing. The divine Life goes on revealing itself endlessly in harmonious action and in conscious vigor. Our very awareness of existence hints that this must be true. Indeed, there has never been a moment when man was separated from God. There can never be a moment when man must consent to such a separation. To demonstrate healing, then, we must resist and reject all that bears opposite testimony. By our willingness to do this, and by our steadfastness in doing it, we rise above the illusions of material sense and into the reality of unerring Science. Here thought and action meet, both having their origin in the divine Principle, which is Life itself.
