THE SUPREMACY OF DIVINE LAW

From the February 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the prayer which Christ Jesus taught us, called the Lord's Prayer, we say (Matt. 6:10): "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." Mary Baker Eddy, in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," gives us the spiritual sense of these words, radical affirmations which awaken us to their full meaning (p. 16): "Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever present;" and (p. 17), "Enable us to know,—as in heaven, so on earth,—God is omnipotent, supreme." In line with this, Mrs. Eddy further states (ibid., p. 427), "Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so called, as well as in the spiritual."

The writer often used to ponder these statements, seeking to understand how God, infinite and eternal Spirit, can be recognized as the supreme power in the physical realm, when in the light of the infinitude of Spirit a material universe cannot, in reality, exist. She has learned through Christian Science that immortal Mind is supreme in the physical realm because it is the only Mind. We learn in Science to prove that God is All in all; that He is Spirit, the universal cause, the only creator; that He fills all space; and that therefore man and all creation are spiritual.

However, according to the testimony of the material senses, we seem to live in a physical realm; and as men study this physical realm they see a measure of order. Humanity continues to discover and use what are called material laws of physics, chemistry, medicine, psychology, and so on to gain dominion over the limitation and mortality it considers itself subject to, only to find that with increased control of matter come greater difficulties. For instance, men have learned something of the atom, but the knowledge as yet has been applied primarily to creating a destructive instrument which claims to threaten human existence.
