WHAT IS TRUE EVIDENCE?

From the February 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What a glorious opportunity students of Christian Science have to prove that the evidence of Spirit is real, and the evidence of material sense unreal. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 297): "Erroneous belief is destroyed by truth. Change the evidence, and that disappears which before seemed real to this false belief, and the human consciousness rises higher. Thus the reality of being is attained and man found to be immortal."

Generally speaking, the evidence of the senses is considered as something outside oneself. But early in his study of Christian Science the student learns that everything is mental and exists as a state of consciousness. He learns that there is only one Mind, one Spirit, and that man reflects and expresses this Mind or Spirit, which is God.

Before coming into Christian Science one may have thought matter was very real and the evidence of the five physical senses was reliable. Yet in Hebrews we read (11:1), "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." How well Jesus applied the truth of this statement! It made him the master of every situation which confronted him. God's law of perfection, which governs His entire creation, was so evident to Jesus that he was enabled to restore the sick to a normal state of health, to raise the dead, to feed the multitudes, and even to free himself from the sepulcher. He was the living evidence of Spirit individualized.
