"MAN IS NOT A PENDULUM"

From the August 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some people feel that their lives are governed by chance. Their existence seems constantly to shift from poise to in-harmony, from peace to discord. They believe that misfortune is God-sent, even in the face of this dynamic pronouncement in the Bible (Gen. 1:31): "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."

The master Christian, Christ Jesus, never accepted world beliefs of sin, disease, or death as true or God-sent. He understood clearly and positively that the good which God makes is the only reality. He knew that the inharmonies which seem to fill human experience are not from God; therefore they have no power and cannot rule man. Through his inspired understanding of the immutable laws of God he was able to heal the sick and sinning, feed the hungering multitudes in direct opposition to the so-called laws of matter, and raise the dead. Today the Christ, Truth, is again feeding and healing the hungering world through the divinely inspired teachings of Christian Science. As this Science is applied to human affairs, good is proved to be real, and evil to be the lying imposition trying to claim power. Joy is seen to be a part of reality, sorrow but a dream. Health is found to be man's true state, sickness a false belief. Life is found to be eternal, death a lying claim.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 246), "Man is not a pendulum, swinging between evil and good, joy and sorrow, sickness and health, life and death." How typical is this radical statement, coming from the pen of our Leader, whose devotion, consecration, and divine inspiration enabled her to reveal to us the healing truth practiced by Christ Jesus over nineteen centuries ago. Her spiritualized thought remained steadfastly above accepted world beliefs, denied what seemed to be and proclaimed the truth of things as they are in reality.
