THE GARMENT'S HEM

From the August 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In beautiful words we are told in the first verse of Hymn No. 96 in the Christian Science Hymnal:

The power that filled the garment's hem
Is evermore the same.

It may be asked, "What is that garment, and what is the nature of the power that fills its hem?" One of the characteristics of the robe of Christ, Truth, is that it is wholly consistent, complete. The indivisibility is symbolized for us in the description of the garment of Christ Jesus as seamless. Another characteristic of the garment of Truth is its purity, the purity of righteousness. This is made manifest in the account in the Bible of what Peter, James, and John saw on the mount of transfiguration. Luke says that Jesus' robe became "white and glistering" (9:29). Then, the power that fills the pure, complete garment of Christ, Truth, is the power of Truth, Life, and Love, and it is, as the hymn proclaims, "evermore the same."
