DIVINE SONSHIP

From the August 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A momentous fact for all time is the truth that man is the son of God. His origin and existence are in divine Mind, Life, and Love. In I John we read (3:1), "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." When understood, this all-important truth is mankind's salvation. Accepted, realized, and applied to human problems, this truth promotes health, harmony, and immortality.

The sacred, scientific relationship of Father and son, of Mind and its idea, includes no element of matter, evil, sorrow, sin, disease, or death. In the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy states (p. 63): "In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being."

A false sense of man's origin is the basis of all human discord. Thus the importance of understanding the truth of spiritual being. The belief that God, Spirit, creates man from matter; the belief that God is holy, but that man is a sinner, or that He is eternal Life, but that man dies, constitute the false theology of the ages which obscures true being. It was this theology which Christ Jesus came to rebuke and to prove worthless.
