CAN ANYTHING RESIST GOD?

From the January 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Resistance to God must be a myth, else God is not All and supreme. Christian Science reveals God's allness and omnipotence, and it also reveals man's perfection as His likeness. It declares that man is not mortal and helpless, but spiritual and forever reflecting the divine might. If these truths of God and man are not becoming apparent in one's experience, this is because the mortal sense of life is claiming to resist the enlightenment of divine Science, which has come to this age. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 329, 330), "Human resistance to divine Science weakens in proportion as mortals give up error for Truth and the understanding of being supersedes mere belief."

Christ Jesus showed that nothing can resist God. He detected and summarily dealt with every phase of evil that would have prevented his proving the resistless might of God's will, which he brought to bear on human error. In his experiences Jesus overcame the stubborn errors which rebelled against the Christ he represented. First of all, he encountered resistance which came to him as temptation. In the wilderness he mastered the instinctive beliefs which claim to be the inheritance of every human being—the false beliefs that life, substance, and intelligence are material rather than spiritual. But let us note that Jesus succeeded in this mastery only after forty days of prayer and fasting. His refusal to conform to material instincts was not casual but deep and penetrating and effective. His victory fitted him for his ministry, throughout which he unfailingly expressed the power of Christ, Truth, to prove the nothingness of any resistance to God.

Until one recognizes the unreality of these inherited material beliefs, he will find himself unconsciously resisting God. He will be held in a personal sense of life and thereby will be hampered in healing or accepting healing. The complacency of humanity in accepting, generation after generation, the cycle of birth, maturity, and decay is evidence that the personal sense of existence still widely resists the advent of the Science which reveals man's inheritance of immortal life. The example of all Christian Scientists is needed to inspire mankind to throw off the inherited bondage of the ages as our Master did.
