GOD'S GOVERNMENT OF THE ELEMENTS

From the January 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The student of Christian Science need A not be fearful or helpless before the elements, for he knows how to apply his understanding of the truths of spiritual being to the weather or the elements just as he applies it to any other phase of daily living. He does not attempt to control the elements; he recognizes that God governs all and that His government is supreme and kind. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.427), "Immortal Mind, governing all, must be acknowledged as supreme in the physical realm, so-called, as well as in the spiritual."

The Bible states that God gave man dominion over all the earth (see Gen.1:26). Christ Jesus demonstrated this dominion when he quieted the storm which arose over the sea he was crossing with his disciples. It is related (Mark 4:39): "He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea. Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." The Master neither feared nor was helpless before the storm.

The powerlessness of elementary and visible evil, the dominion of man, and the government of God are vital points in Jesus' teaching and practice. They are points which we cannot overlook when endeavoring to do prayerful metaphysical work in annulling or preventing error and its design of accomplishment.
