NO LESSER LOYALTY

From the January 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Divine Mind rightly demands man's entire obedience, affection, and strength. No reservation is made for any lesser loyalty." These words written by Mary Baker Eddy in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 183) state an important rule in Christian Science. An undivided loyalty in any field of wholesome endeavor usually succeeds; whereas a divided loyalty does not succeed.

Fidelity to Truth is a divine demand, as our Leader indicates. It is a key to victory over the discords of physical sense. One cannot properly be loyal to opposites. In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus said (Matt. 6:24): "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Therefore it is up to every individual to decide where his loyalty, affection, and support shall be placed.

Those who feel the healing touch of the Christ through their study of Christian Science do not usually find this choice difficult to make. The light of spiritual reality which they glimpse shows them the way. This does not mean that they may not encounter the aggressive resistance of mortal mind when they turn away from their former religious and medical opinions, or when they avoid certain social engagements in order to give undivided attention to the study and practice of Christian Science. Their loyalty to Truth, however, will not be too difficult to achieve when it is the result of spiritual perception.
