KNOWING GOD FIRST

From the January 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If we would have healthy bodies and live a life of peace and happiness in this human existence, we must learn to know God; we must live according to divine Principle, To know God is to know man, the real harmonious man; but first we must know God.

Just as the composer must know the principle of music before writing inspiring compositions; as the engineer designing a bridge must begin with the principle of mathematics; so we must learn and know the Principle that governs man. When we make God, Principle, the starting point of our thought, we find perfect and harmonious solutions to our problems. Referring to Principle as a starting point, Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 298), "Spiritual ideas, like numbers and notes, start from Principle, and admit no materialistic beliefs."

The Bible tells us that God created all, that He is the only power, and that there is no God beside Him. God did not create, nor does He know, evil or sin, for He has no consciousness of anything unlike Himself. Jesus, our Exemplar, healed by the Christ, Truth, the spiritual idea of God. We can acquire for ourselves here and now an understanding of the healing Christ, Truth.
