PROGRESS IS THE LAW OF GOD

From the January 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus was the world's greatest student and practitioner of divine law. It could be said of him, in the words of the Psalmist (Ps. 1:2), "His delight is in the law of the Lord." His human experience was given to loving, living, and demonstrating God's law. Through his obedience to infallible spiritual law the sick were healed, the sinning regenerated, the mourning comforted, the fearful reassured. Yet he was accused of healing, or casting out devils, "by Beelzebub the prince of the devils" (Matt. 12:24). However, this false accusation could not hinder his progress Spiritward.

In support of his unequaled demonstration of God's law of Love, Christ Jesus said (Matt. 5:17, 18): "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." He added, "I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."

The Pharisees thought that because Jesus did not adhere strictly to their ritualistic law, he was not sent of God and could not fulfill God's plan or law. But Christ Jesus, from his higher spiritual understanding, was demonstrating God's law in a way that the material sense of the Pharisees could not comprehend. Thus Jesus progressed. His righteousness, or obedience to divine law, sustained him in every step heavenward.
