God gives us this promise in the Bible (Isa. 43:2): "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee." This assurance helped me when the elevator on which I was working as an operator dropped from the street floor to the basement. I was badly shaken up. Later I suffered such severe pains in my stomach that I had to go to bed. My sister, who had become a member of The Mother Church some years before and who has a good understanding of Christian Science, helped me by reading to me from the Bible and from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy.
One night, about two weeks after the accident, there was a most severe attack of the pain. A Christian Science practitioner was called immediately, and she lovingly gave me treatment. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 393): "Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." These words I studied faithfully, and I realized that all our strength comes from God, our creator. In about two months I was completely healed and went back to work on the elevator without any fear or hesitation.
While suffering from a severe case of sinus trouble, I called a practitioner for help. He asked me to study Hymn No. 145 in the Christian Science Hymnal, which begins,
