Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says (Science and Health, p. 390), "When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the testimony of the material senses with divine Science." I recalled this statement after being held in bondage for about two years by a foot difficulty. My attention was railed to a growth on one of my toes, but I thought very little about it, although I knew, as we are taught in Christian Science, that since God made man perfect, he cannot manifest anything but perfection. However, more growths appeared.
A friend, who was not a Christian Scientist, called attention to the hazards of the condition, its rapid spread, and the possibility that its contagious action might affect others. Then I awakened to take my stand as a Christian Scientist and to do consecrated work for a healing.
I had not been obedient to Mrs. Eddy's statement quoted above, but I was now ready to heed it and also her words on page 391 of Science and Health, where she says, "Instead of blind and calm submission to the incipient or advanced stages of disease, rise in rebellion against them."
