UNCOVERING AND FORSAKING IDOLATRY

From the March 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It was one of those rare instances when friend meets friend and talk takes an introspective turn. In the midst of discussion one friend said to the other, "Do you mind telling me what occupies your thought most of the time?"

In an instant the answer came: "Steel. My life is devoted to steel, its manufacture, its sale, its innumerable uses from small tools to mammoth buildings and stupendous bridges. The only honest answer I can give you is—steel."

"In ancient times," his friend replied, "the people worshiped images made of wood and stone, of gold and silver. I cannot help wondering if your constant contemplation of steel is the worshiping of it. Apparently it is the most important thing in the world to you. It presents an interesting question whether your attitude toward steel could possibly be considered idolatry."
