Christian Science treatment is the epitome of prayer, the absolute knowing of the presence and power of God, and the specific handling, or denying, of error or evil. Christian Science treatment acknowledges God's unchangeable, divine law. It affirms the eternality of infinite good and of man as God's image or idea. Its operation is spiritually mental.
The teachings and works of Christian Science are in accord with the teachings and works of Christ Jesus. They are based upon the absolute fact that God, Spirit, is All. The allness of Spirit, understood, proves the unreality of its opposite, matter. What appear to be a material body and a material universe are seen in Christian Science to be the aggregation of false human beliefs, without substance or reality. Christian Science treatment, dealing with thought only, operates to replace human beliefs with the spiritual facts of being. Through this scientific process of accurate reasoning, one experiences the operation of God's law, resulting in benefits for the body, the home, business, and church—for the entire world.
In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," under the heading "Mental Treatment Illustrated," Mary Baker Eddy gives invaluable rules to be followed in treatment. For example, she says (p. 411), "Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients." This is a rule which the alert Christian Scientist adheres to faithfully. Throughout her writings Mrs. Eddy makes clear how to allay fear, which is always based upon the belief of life in matter, life separated from God, divine Life. She says (p. 412), "The great fact that God lovingly governs all, never punishing aught but sin, is your standpoint, from which to advance and destroy the human fear of sickness."
