Christian Science was introduced into our family in 1904 with the healing of my grandmother. She had suffered from some form of stomach trouble for many years. Prior to our calling a Christian Science practitioner, she had been in a coma for some time, and seven physicians had pronounced her case hopeless. The practitioner sat by her bedside giving treatment, and within an hour my grandmother regained consciousness and was healed of the stomach difficulty.
My stepfather drank excessively and was abusive to my mother and me. On one occasion I felt as though God had forsaken me. Then this angel thought came to me: "God has not forsaken you, but you are forsaking Him if you believe this lie which is confronting you." I realized that it was not what my stepfather did or said to me that actually hurt me, but rather what I thought about these things. Then I saw that it was my own wrong thinking which was abusing me, and I hastened to correct my thought. I knew that there could be only God's man present, since God is the Father of all and the only creator. I was blessed beyond words by holding this right idea of man in my consciousness, for it brought about a greater sense of love and a manifestation of harmony.
In 1929 I was faced for the first time in my life with financial difficulties. I found myself with a mortgage due on my home and no visible means of paying it or my current bills. Every time I became fearful concerning this situation I insisted on man's unity with God, the true source of supply and the only real substance. I studied the article "Angels" on pages 306 and 307 of "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mrs. Eddy and also this verse in the Bible (Rom. 13: 8): "Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."
