When I became a student of Christian Science I learned that the expression of gratitude has great healing power. I have found that no matter what the stage of one's understanding of this Science may be, it is the power of God, acknowledged, accepted, and applied, that heals. Whether our understanding is small or great, we can heal through reliance on God, who actually is the healer.
When I was a very young student of Christian Science I proved the above statement to be true. Our little daughter had suffered for several days from an inflammatory condition of the mouth. While I was downtown shopping one day I went into a Christian Science Reading Room and talked with the librarian there for a few moments. She recommended that I read some of the Christian Science literature. What she said or what I read I do not remember, but I did gain a wonderful sense of peace and felt uplifted.
That evening at the dinner table the little girl, who was sitting in her high chair, started to cry when her father tried to encourage her to eat. I arose, went around the table, put my arms around her, and said quietly in her ear, "Darling, you are God's perfect child." With that I returned to my place, and she picked up her spoon and ate her dinner. The next morning every trace of the sores was gone. To me, this was a complete proof that it is God who does the healing. Certainly my understanding of Christian Science was of itself not very great, but what I had I did acknowledge, accept, and apply with the result that a beautiful demonstration of Truth was made then and there.
