Testimonies of Healing

In spite of very earnest efforts in early...

From the March 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In spite of very earnest efforts in early life to gain salvation, all I ever gleaned from the Bible was this statement in the first two verses of Genesis: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep." My study of human philosophies failed to pierce this darkness, and for me, life was meaningless (without form) and empty (void).

Whilst I was in this frame of mind, the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was placed in my hands. Then "the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light" (Gen. 1:2, 3). From this starting point I gradually glimpsed that man is not dust but that he is the spiritual image of God, having dominion over all the earth, blessed and loved of God.

Before I had found Christian Science and while I was employed as a senior official in a large organization, friction developed between some of my superiors and myself. Not knowing anything about the religion of Love, which Jesus preached and practiced, I attempted to work out the problem along human lines, countering offense by offense. Soon it was evident that I could not match the strength of my opponents, and I lost my position. This loss caused me a great sense of fear, frustration, and hatred. But through my study of Christian Science, these mental qualities were slowly but certainly destroyed. A new position was obtained, and as love and hope gradually filled consciousness, so this position also improved. Without my realizing it the scientific translation of mortal mind which Mrs. Eddy explains on pages 115 and 116 of Science and Health was slowly but surely taking place in my consciousness.
