Testimonies of Healing

I should like to express my deep gratitude...

From the April 1957 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I should like to express my deep gratitude for the many healings and for the great joy that I have had since coming into Christian Science. My first healing came before I knew anything of this religion except that some relatives who were members of a Church of Christ, Scientist, said that they had had healings through it.

I had an attack of pneumonia, a disease from which I had suffered at various times all my life. The doctor told my parents that he had given up all hope of my recovery, since I was unconscious and sinking rapidly. My mother then remembered that her sister and her nephew had told her of Christian Science and said that they had benefited from it. She called her nephew, told him what the doctor had said, and asked if he could help. He replied in the words of the Bible (Rom. 8:28), "We know that all things work together for good to them that love God." He also told her to go to me and to repeat with conviction these words from the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (pp. 465, 466): "Principle and its idea is one, and this one is God, omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent Being, and His reflection is man and the universe."

My mother said: "She will not hear me. She is unconscious."

Her nephew answered, "She will hear the Word of Truth." And he promised that he would pray for me. I slept quietly that night, and when the doctor came the next day, he said that I had passed the crisis. However, he requested that I stay in bed and have a medical nurse in attendance. The nurse told me of cases like mine that afterwards resulted in phlebitis, and one morning I awoke with what the doctor said was the worst case of phlebitis he had ever seen. He predicted weeks of severe pain.

Again we turned to Christian Science for help. Instead of taking the opiates which had been prescribed or experiencing the severe suffering which had been predicted, I slept soundly; and in the morning when the doctor came he could not find a vestige of the disease. I then took up the study of Christian Science. At the time of these healings I was expecting a third child, and I had been told that conditions were such that I would have to have an emergency operation. I confidently asked for help in Christian Science, and the healing was immediate and complete.

Christian Science has been a staff to lean on, and my family and I have had many-remarkable healings. This Science has been a wonderful help to us in business as well. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 261), "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." The company with which my husband had been for many years closed, and although my husband was beyond middle age, he had to seek other employment. We worked to know that he could not be separated from God or from the expression of activity. We had some very heavy expenses, and it was hard to meet them.

One day during this time we heard from one of our sons that he and his small family needed our help until he could get a better position. He was the manager of a big estate, but the owner had not paid him for quite a while and now had gone into bankruptcy. All that day I rejoiced in God's promise (Isa. 65:24), "Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." Also I clung firmly to the spiritual assurance that God, divine Love, is fully able to supply whatever is needed by men.

The telephone rang that afternoon, and a man asked my name. Then he said that a young man by that name had been recommended to him as one who could manage all the branches of his estate. However, the caller said that he had been unable to find the young man's name in the telephone book. I told him that our son lived out of town, but that I would take him to see him. The position proved to be one which our son could ably fill, and he was engaged at once. The same day my husband found a position for which he was well fitted in a bank. The bank had tried for quite a while to get the right man for the place and was as happy as we were. In this new position my husband was instrumental in helping many people keep their property and get on a better financial footing.

All this was many years ago. Our family has had numerous healings and proofs of good since that time. Among the blessings I have had is the happy privilege of membership in The Mother Church and a branch church, as well as class instruction.—
