I started attending the Christian Science Sunday School with neighbors when I was seventeen. From then on for some time I attended fairly regularly, but I did not put first things first. I allowed myself to be blinded by materiality, and it was not until many years later that I took decisive steps to overcome the smoking habit and become an active Christian Scientist. Tobacco smoke had figuratively beclouded my understanding. Since discontinuing this habit I am in awe at the beauty and clarity of meaning which I have found in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
This healing came through the loving, patient help of a dear Christian Science friend, and I shall always be grateful for her firm encouragement and unwavering assurance that I could overcome this tenacious habit. The abandonment of social drinking quickly followed, and at last I was free to apply for church membership.
A few years ago, a great jumble of circumstances entirely changed the financial status of our family, and we were forced to move far out into the country into a very small house. I worked prayerfully night and day, seeking a better understanding of substance and supply. There were times when we had an almost hour-by-hour existence, but divine Love never failed to meet our human need.
