A STEP TOWARD FREEDOM

From the October 1959 issue of The Christian Science Journal

If a claim were made to any of us for payment of something we had not purchased, there is no doubt that we would recognize at once the falsity of the claim; then we would deny it. With the same conviction should we refuse to accept the false claims constantly being presented to us through the press, radio, and television of a world in chaos and of sickness, sin, and death in all their myriad forms.

Mary Baker Eddy designates the source of such erroneous beliefs as mortal mind. This designation enables us to differentiate between the real and the unreal, the real being the creation of immortal Mind, God. The Bible declares that God is "of purer eyes than to behold evil" (Hab. 1:13). Therefore the claims of mortal mind are without foundation or creator, and through the study and application of Christian Science we have a positive and effective defense against world beliefs. This defense, supported by Truth, not only heals the individual, but helps bring harmony to the world.

On page 242 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy makes this statement: "Denial of the claims of matter is a great step towards the joys of Spirit, towards human freedom and the final triumph over the body." She proved, and taught others to prove, that freedom from inharmonious conditions is a present possibility. This freedom is won not through passive acceptance of world beliefs, but through daily denial of all matter's erroneous claims based upon the truth that God and His perfect creation alone are real.
