Over thirty–five years ago, while in medical practice, I was first awakened to the power of spiritual healing when I saw a patient of mine healed of what my colleagues and I had pronounced an inoperable and incurable cancer. The patient had had a cancer of the breast removed about a year previously, but the condition had spread, and our medical prognosis gave her only a few weeks to live. Two years later I was dumfounded to meet this woman and her daughter on a bus, at which time I learned that she had been healed by Christian Science and had been restored to perfect health.
Not long after this incident, I gave up medical practice and engaged in other lines of work until the end of 1956, when I retired. A lifetime accumulation of bad habits and ailments had begun to tell on my health. I wanted to start life anew—a second career—in every sense of the word.
My thoughts turned back to my former patient, and I reasoned, "If Christian Science could bring that woman back from the very jaws of death, it's about time I learned what Christian Science is and how it heals."
