OUR UNIVERSAL FAMILY

From the March 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ALMOST everyone agrees that one of earth's greatest joys is the love expressed in the human family. Paradoxically, however, the human family seems the source of much of earth's sorrow, and all too often we find the sorrow almost outweighing the joy.

Knowing that one of the deepest and most compelling desires of the human race is to love and to be loved, Christ Jesus endeavored through teaching and healing to reassure the hungering people that God was their loving Father. Christian Science feeds the world's hunger for affection by its revelation of God's motherhood. This establishes God's complete and eternal parenthood, the absolute inseparability of God, divine Love, from His reflection, man, and the indestructible unity of God's universal family.

In discussing progression of the human concept of God up to the divine, Mary Baker Eddy states in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp.576,577), "This human sense of Deity yields to the divine sense, even as the material sense of personality yields to the incorporeal sense of God and man as the infinite Principle and infinite idea,—as one Father with His uni-versal family, held in the gospel of Love."
