THE DEMANDS OF THE PLENTEOUS YEARS

From the March 1960 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In periods of national prosperity there is danger of our forgetting true, spiritual values and letting thought and activity become absorbed in material getting and spending. In times of so-called famine or depression there is danger of our doubting the possibility of divine help. In the Psalms we are told that during the exodus the children of Israel tempted God and limited Him, saying (78:19), "Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?"

How shall we educate thought to the necessity and the possibility of reliance on God at all times? Can we not learn to recognize God and acknowledge His everpresent love regardless of outward circumstances? Must we not eventually cease to be controlled by material circumstances? Should we not feel conscious of the divine control of Spirit, God, through the operation of spiritual law?

Christian Science assures us that such spiritual control is possible. This assurance is based squarely upon the Bible promises and especially upon the teachings and demonstrations of Christ Jesus, who proved so fully his God-given dominion that it was said of him (Mark 7:37), "He hath done all things well."
