ALCHEMY, a medieval chemical science, had as its great objects the transmutation of base metals into gold and the discovery of a universal remedy for diseases and the means of indefinitely prolonging life. The attempts to attain these objectives ended in failure.
Christian Science presents a spiritual alchemy. Mrs. Eddy discovered in 1866 the universal remedy for all the ills of mankind, its sin, sickness, and death, and made her discovery available to humanity in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, and in her other writings.
An illuminating statement in this textbook reads (p. 422):"As when an acid and alkali meet and bring out a third quality, so mental and moral chemistry changes the material base of thought, giving more spirituality to consciousness and causing it to depend less on material evidence. These changes which go on in mortal mind serve to reconstruct the body. Thus Christian Science, by the alchemy of Spirit, destroys sin and death."
