I shall always be grateful for the healings and the reformation of character which I experienced in the early years of my study of Christian Science.
My first healing came about through the prayerful work done by a devout student of Christian Science who was called to my bedside at a time when I was delirious with fever during an epidemic of influenza. As a result of her treatment the pain and fever immediately subsided, and I fell sound asleep. When I awoke the next morning I was completely well. This remarkable healing convinced me of the efficacy of Christian Science treatment.
Some years later a further study of this Science revealed to me that the enslaving habit of smoking was not in harmony with it and was retarding my spiritual growth. In the course of my prayers I asked myself the questions: "Who is it that has this incessant desire to smoke? Is it really you?" The answer to the second question had to be in the negative. I was conscious of a sincere desire for spiritual growth. Logic told me that I could not in reality have two contradictory desires. This helped me to see that the craving for tobacco was no part of my true selfhood as one of divine Mind's spiritual ideas, and the desire for it then left me.
