From the November 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The attention of First Readers is invited to page 12 of the booklet entitled "Guidance for Readers" in which the "Correlative Scripture from I John" is discussed. This booklet was mailed to all branch churches and societies in 1959.

In response to questions concerning the reading of this passage in Christian Science church services, an item by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, which was published in the Christian Science Sentinel of March 21, 1901, is helpful. In this item Mrs. Eddy indicates the proper capitalization. In addition to this, an article which was published in the Sentinel of January 6, 1906, and reprinted in the issue of January 30, 1954, entitled "I John 3:1, 2, 3" by Professor Hermann S. Hering, points out that the words "he" and "him" in the verses quoted refer to God and to God's appearing, or the Christ, and that the correct spiritual interpretation is obtained when the passage is read with this in thought.

Membership in The Mother Church unfolds rich and satisfying rewards for the earnest student of Christian Science. So also does membership in a branch church with the privilege of active participation therein.
